PRF: healing with your own material

PRF: healing with your own material

For some procedures we use material that is obtained from a small amount of your own blood. Specialists call it PRF. It can support healing after a procedure.

What PRF is

PRF stands for platelet rich fibrin. Fibrin is a substance made by the body that also holds a blood clot together. To obtain it we take a little blood from you. This blood goes into a centrifuge, that is a device that separates the components by spinning them quickly. What remains is a firm, elastic material. We prepare it immediately before the procedure and use it straight away.

When we use PRF

We use PRF above all after tooth removals, when placing implants and when building up bone. We place the material into the wound or onto the area that is to heal. It stays there and does not have to be removed later. Whether it is used depends on the procedure and on your starting situation.

Why we use material from your own body

Because the material is obtained from your own blood, the risk of transmitting disease through foreign material does not arise. We need no additional substances for it, and material from other people is not used. In many cases the wound heals more quietly as a result.

How the process looks

The blood is taken on the day of treatment, shortly before the procedure. It is comparable to having blood taken at your GP and lasts only a moment. Preparing it takes a few minutes, so you do not have to wait long. After that we carry on with the treatment as planned. You do not need a second appointment for it. Please tell us beforehand if you tend to feel unwell when blood is taken.

Costs and consultation

PRF is an additional service that the statutory health insurer as a rule does not cover. Whether it suits your treatment is something we discuss together beforehand. Do get in touch if you have questions about it. We take the time for that.
