Tooth Replacement at a Glance

If a tooth is missing, the gap should not be left open. Over time the neighbouring teeth tilt into the free space, and the tooth in the opposing jaw slowly moves after it. Which replacement suits you depends on the gap, on the bone and on your own wishes.

When replacement becomes necessary

Sometimes a tooth is so badly damaged that a filling no longer holds it. Sometimes it is already missing. In both situations the bite changes bit by bit, because the remaining teeth adjust their position. Chewing and speech can change as well. That is why we look with you early on at which solution comes into question.

Crown and bridge

A crown fits like a cap over a badly damaged tooth and gives it back its shape. Your own tooth is preserved and carries the crown. A bridge closes a gap by resting on the two neighbouring teeth. These teeth are ground down for this, so we weigh up together whether a bridge is the fitting choice.

Dentures and replacement on implants

If several teeth are missing, a partial denture comes into question. It replaces the missing teeth and holds on to the remaining ones. If there are no natural teeth left, a full denture carries the replacement on the jaw. You take both out for cleaning.

An implant is a small titanium screw that is placed in the jaw as an artificial root. A crown, a bridge or a denture is fitted on top of it later. The neighbouring teeth stay untouched. An implant can last many years with good care. Enough bone is needed for it, and we check that beforehand.

What the replacement is made of and what it costs

For visible areas we often use full ceramic, that is ceramic without any metal content. It appears translucent like a natural tooth. There is also ceramic on a metal framework, which is very hard wearing. Which material suits is something we discuss with you.

Before the treatment we draw up a treatment and cost plan (Heil- und Kostenplan). It sets out what is planned and what share your health insurer covers. You submit the plan to your insurer and can then decide in your own time. Larger treatments can be paid in instalments.
